menu The Legend of Mother Earth

At the beginning, the earth did not exist. The world was an island floating on the primeval ocean beyond the sky. A young woman from the Huron-Wendat nation named Aataensic set out to look for medicinal plants. She tripped on the root of a tree that fell and took her with it through a hole in the sky. Moved by her beauty, all kinds of animals came to save her. The great geese took flight, caught her fall, and placed her on the turtleís back as she would need a comfortable place to live. The animals held council and decided to create a great land for her. With much difficulty, they gathered the mud from the roots of the fallen tree. The great turtle offered to carry the mud on its back. All the animals started covering the turtleís back with the mud and all this mud became a big island, then a continent and finally the earth that we know
